The story of the Balmer See Hotel begins in spring 1990 a few months after the collapse of the GDR.
I, Rainer Stephani, was living in Munich at the time and played golf at Golfclub Olching e.V.
A golf friend spoke to me and invited me to a meeting with three other business friends from the Munich area and two gentlemen from the former GDR.
This two gentlemen came from the island of Usedom, an area that was completely unknown in Bavaria at the time. I had the advantage that in the fifties, when I was still living in Gotha, I spent holidays on Usedom and therefore I remember the island well.
This evening, in anticipation of blooming landscapes promised by Chancellor Kohl, many unrealistic plans were forged.
In order not to mislead the insecure guest of Usedom to ill-considered acts, I called him shortly after the meeting and made a visit to the island of Usedom..
On July 3, 1990, I drove with my friend to Usedom. The island was a true idyll at the time, as there was no longer any FDGB tourism and the new tourism had not yet started.
During our tour to Usedom, on the road between Pudagla and Neppermin caused me the beautiful landscape opposite my friend, who was also a golfer, to the statement: "Here you would have to build a golf course". This intention in no way existed at the time.
However, my friend made this remark to be active. He called me about a week later and told me that he had been to the community and that everything was clear, we could build the golf course.
Although this was never planned, we then arranged another visit to the island of Usedom and we also took a gentleman from the golf club, who was involved in the planning of new golf courses. This gentleman was so enthusiastic about the island that he immediately made big plans.
In order to be able to examine the realization of a golf course at all, it was necessary to knoiw about the property conditions. On another visit in August 1990, a colleague of mine in the land registry Wolgast found out from the existing documents all the landowners. It turned out that almost all owners were based in Balm.
In October 1990, a meeting with the owners concerned took place in the restaurant "Alte Schule", where the possibility of such a project was explained. The idea was well received by the owners, which is why I decided to start with the realization of the project.
The necessary leases for the properties were completed and the first plans for a possible hotel were sketched out with an architect from Bavaria.
However, the planning and approval phase became much more difficult and longer than expected. The planning of the golf course required considerable financial input both for the planner of the course as well as for the necessary landscape architects and a whole series of necessery surveys and environmental studies. Our plans were received very positively by the aurhorities, but this did not change the fact that corresponding procedures for land use plan, development plans and building permits had to be carried out.
First in 1996, sp 5 years later, it was time for us to start building the golf course and the hotel.
In the summer of 1996 we could start with a partial construction permit to work on the golf course.
On October 2, 1996, the first ground-breaking ceremony and laying of the foundation stone for the hotel took place.
First of all, we built an 18-hole golf course with a 6-hole practice course.
Between 1997/1998 we started to build the hotel including the construction of the main building with spa, underground parking and the four houses "Krebssee", "Gothensee", "Schmollensee" and "Schloonsee".
After a long period of planning and construction, the hotel opened on May 28, 1998.
The golf course was limited playable at this time, because of the long winter, however the first guests have felt very well and are partially remained regulars until today.
The official opening tournament for the golf course took place on 20 June 1999 with an evening event. Already in the year 2000 the golf course was extended by nine courses, so that then 3 x 9 courses were available, which could be combined witch each other. At this time, the golf reception was built. The second expansion of the golf park followed already in the years 2007/2008. Here the golf course was extended to a total of 2 x 18 lanes and 9-hole practice course. At this time, the toilet house was built on the golf course.
In the year 2002 the plant was extended by the harbor and the sunbathing area.
The Asia pavilion for the expansion of spa services opened in 2005.
In the hotel area, the expansion and reconstruction of the swimming pool area was completed in 2008.
The extension of the restaurant "Alte Schule" took place in 2008. In 2015, the restaurant was conceptually reorganized and our guests have since enjoyed an italian kitchen.
On February 2, 2012, a terrible fire of the main house came as a result of a technical defect. With help of all forces the reconstruction succeeded after only 156 days, so that in July 2012 the reopening took place.
The apartments in the house "Böhmke" and "Werder" were completed in 2002.
The apartments in the house "Usedomer See" und "Krinker See" were completed in 2006.
The house "Wolgastsee" was opened in 2008 and "Nepperminer See" in 2012.
In addition, the hotel area was extended in 2014 to the house "Kölpinsee".
The Steakhus, the greenkeeper machine hall and the underground parking for the caddy cars were built in 2012.
On 28.05.2018 we celebrated the 20th anniversary of our Golfhotel.
After more than 25 years, many efforts, great moments, some ups and downs, we can now be very proud of our creations.
